if the environment ... ( 1 year ago by adibain)
if the environment is hot enough it may work just on ice. It's basic need is temperature difference between the hot and the cold plates.
Stirling cycle has ... ( 1 year ago by acerkiwi)
Stirling cycle has be used with a nuclear heat source.
However the "Rankine"(steam turbine) cycle is mostly with nuclear power.

would a stirling engine work in space?

I am working on drawings , i could sell them to you if you were interested.
Yes. Actually, ... ( 1 year ago by ErikWannee)
Yes. Actually, there ARE Stirling engines working in space already. There they can be highly effective, because temperature differences can be extreme. The hot side is a nuclear thing and the cold side is the super cold universe.
A so called 'free piston' Stirling engine can produce electricity for many many years in a very effective way: The piston is a magnet and moves through a coil: The most basic way to produce A.C.
im building a ... ( 1 year ago by motymen)
im building a stirling engine myself and wanted to ask how did you make the piston?
The piston is ... ( 1 year ago by acerkiwi)
The piston is machined from mild steel, about 22.05mm in diameter, 0.02mm smaller than the cylinder.
Great care need to be taken with finish and accuracy for it to work.

pumping water, ... ( 11 months ago by acerkiwi)
pumping water, generating electricity and when driven by an electric motor refrigration / heating.
The most common application today for stirling engines is cryogenic cooling.
why do you have an ... ( 11 months ago by bobbie001)
why do you have an ice cube on top? is it for cooling of the air or something?
For them most part ... ( 11 months ago by DoctorAwesome)
For them most part it won't play a huge role in conventional propulsion. :( No torque/hp numbers.
i've seen them made ... ( 10 months ago by Validole)
i've seen them made out of empty tin cans and plastic disks... though you do need accuracy for it to work at the speed yours does.
ice cools the top ... ( 10 months ago by acerkiwi)
ice cools the top plate. water heats the bottom plate. the displacer shuttles air between hot and cold plates creating pressure difference ths propells the piston.
at 250mpa these ... ( 10 months ago by acerkiwi)
at 250mpa these engine are equivilent to diesels in power output / torque. the are perfect for ships due to endless coolant supply.
i was just thinking ... ( 10 months ago by gugegago)
i was just thinking, (JUST imagining) if we route the air from sahara or nearest desert to the cold places of the earth using a VERY EXPENSIVE tunnel or tube, could it be possible?!?!?
I think your heat ... ( 9 months ago by acerkiwi)
I think your heat losses would be excessive.
Using a parabolic mirro you could get a delta T of 500'C plus easily.
A while back I saw ... ( 9 months ago by KenMacMillan)
A while back I saw stirling powered fans being sold out of India. The heat source was an oil lamp or something similar. I thought it was a little ironic to use fire to cool off.
I made it. ( 9 months ago by acerkiwi)
I made it.
thats fuckin kool ... ( 7 months ago by SanitySource)
thats fuckin kool man. i bookmarked this and when i get time i wanna make one.
if you put a prop ... ( 4 months ago by xypsilonx)
if you put a prop on the flywheel ,it could save from energy
that's cool :D ( 1 month ago by aptspire)
