Riz Khan - Medical tourism - 08 Sep 08 - Part 1

Uploaded by: AlJazeeraEnglish
Video Description:
So-called medical tourism where patients travel to foreign countries in order to receive care is not a new phenomenon.
But new figures from Deloitte LLP, an international consulting firm, show how popular the practice has become with an estimated 750,000 Americans seeking medical care abroad in 2007.
Projections indicate this number could be as high as six million by 2010.
As interest in medical tourism increases experts say it is necessary for people to understand the risks that it poses.
The issue of healthcare is without a doubt high on the agenda of millions of Americans, but it is also important in those countries with universal health care policies as waiting time for procedures gets longer, costs increase and the quality of medical care following treatments often leaves a lot to be desired.
Riz discusses the phenomenon of medical tourism with Josef Woodman, author of Patients Beyond Borders, Vishal Bali, CEO of the Wockhardt Hospital Group in India, and neuroscientist Dr Wise Young.

Great job AJE. this is a great growth area for India. My uncle recently had Heart Valve repair in India . it cost him all of $ 1000. the same procedure costs $ 40,000 in the US. as the US economy struggles they are going to have to outsource medical care to India also. like all services medical care is grossly overpriced in US.

There are efforts now underway in medical certification frameworks and standards (quality systems) in place to help the average consumer differentiate the between good and bad offerings, which will become more necessary as the demand for medical travel in the coming decades mushrooms. There are also technology solutions in the development stage which help both doctors and patients manage this changing landscape.
