In short: they wanted to show the system for an external camera team, and use some cool fog effects. So they took their crash hall, which has metal walls and a metal rail in the floor, which confuses the radar. Anywhere else (also a tunnel) would be fine.

What was captured on the video was supposed to be a conceptual demo. The Mercedes team knew that the system did not function in the test hall, although it functions everywhere else due to radar interefence. The Mercedes spokesperson later explains that he does not know why the TV producer was not told, but the board on the ground marks where the car would send the brake signal when the system actually functions.

LOL, I didn't understand the purpose of this at first but MB has an AutoBlind system that auto brakes or something and it doesn't work on an steel enclosed environment that's why the ground highlights when the show it in slow motion because the guy brakes the car itself.

The MB rep said that the system didn't work in the crash test hall used only for dummy crashes b/c of all the installations (metal plates, tracks in the floor etc). Other, supposed hundreds of test in "real street" conditions and EVEN IN TUNNELS proved the system effective(?) B/c it's hard to simulate fog in open air they staged the test for TV. Silly move, considering the reputation at risk. As a side note: please consider that the show "Stern TV" falls more or less into tabloid press category

Awesome! This is a stunning information about how Auto Bild and Mercedes-Benz are marketing a non-functional safety system. The system is clearly not working during the test, but all official personnel is declaring the opposite. Thanks for sharing this video!

natürlich isses Scheisse, was sich der AutoBild-Hirni da erlaubt hat. Dass er sich hat mit einspannen lassen, dieses Lügenkonstrukt mitzubauen.
Aber "paid enough"? Der kann schon vorher draußen irgendwo rumgefahren sein und das Ding getestet haben... mehrere hundert Journalisten habens getestet laut dem Interview - nicht zu unwahrscheinlich also.
