I agree. Once a ... ( 9 months ago by mynamesforest)
I agree. Once a year I install a distro to see what's going on, use it for a week and then get annoyed with it. Yes I am a programmer, but I don't expect to have to be a programmer to achieve things with my OS. It should be protecting the end user from the complexities of the machine, and linux still fails to do this.
OSX is nice but I refuse to spend money on it until it works on my oem PC. I refuse to buy overpriced hardware from little Steves' in the Apple shop.

What desktop environment are you using? I've been using linux since ubuntu 6.06, tried many distro's, and I think I'm finally ready for gentoo so I'm downloading it right now.

LOL! You're on the right track here. Linux is only good if it is making you more productive, for me it is 10-fold. As for OS X, it's okay... but like Gnome it's "so easy" it's unproductive for users like me.

Still, you can't disagree with me when I say that even the simplest distro of Linux is much, much more efficient and productive than any version of Windows!

Make sure you're installing the boot loader (usually GRUB) on your primary hard drive (not on a partition): grub-install --no-floppy /dev/sda (that will usually do it, otherwise refer to the Gentoo Handbook to debug your problem).

whys everyone hating on windows its not even that bad. I tri-boot windows Mac OSX and ubuntu on my media center pc and each os has there pros and cons. And to everyone that thinks that linux and mac osx dont have viruses they do, just not as much as windows because they are not as popular. Oh and before someone says using osx on a pc is illeagal, for me its not because I went out to the apple store to buy the disc and then i pached it myself

nice vid dude, I have a question: I've been running Xp for about 3 years now and I've now installed ubuntu on a partition (with out any boot loader, i could choose freely on start up which system i wanted to use) and one day i decided to re-install Xp MCE I did it and Xp works perfect as usual but i can't find my ubuntu installation on start up! does any1 know what to do?

It sounds as though GRUB was replaced with the Windows boot loader. My recommendation is to boot the Ubuntu CD again and run: grub-install /dev/hd-- (replace -- with the disk and partition).

lol-- check the date I uploaded this video. This was LONG before compiz; this was hand compiled, hand configured, and hand coordinated. That's why it's faster, and shows off all of the features at the time. And that's the difference between distros, while some give you binaries that you can't change, others give you full control over the end result.

i wonder how is GNU/linux going to get virus, if its open source?, i think its rather unlikely, and stop saying "its because is not as popular windows"
Hmm, I'm not sure ... ( 1 month ago by calebgray)
Hmm, I'm not sure if you meant that the likelihood of getting a virus was higher or lower on Linux-- but I can attest to the fact that it's highly unlikely that you'll get one as long as you know what you're doing. The program "top" will show exactly which applications are running, there is no such thing as a hidden app, passing through some dll somewhere... so it's just overall more difficult to get away with a virus on Linux is all. Though, yes, there are plenty of them.
Fast, stable, ... ( 1 month ago by calebgray)
Fast, stable, simple to configure, and powerful... and because I'm too shallow to move on! lol-- Truly XFCE out-of-the-box has been the most efficient window manager I've used to date, it cross platform compatible (runs on my PS3 really well) and I just really like how the developers have not tried to please me with visual effects, if I want Vista, I'll install Vista. You know? :P

Yeah, it's XFCE-- I haven't used Fluxbox, though I have read about it and check out some derivatives of it... I've found that XFCE is the fastest to configure of the many window managers, while being the fastest and most stable.
In this video you're seeing my custom Blue Fire theme... dunno if that's what reminds you of Fluxbox or not. :P
