Looks as if the mic stand wasn't tightened properly and the mic kept dropping toward the floor. He was squatting to get the mandolin's treble hole up to the mic. Gotta hand it to the old guy, he can stick whip ass even in a crouch!

i like bluegrass alot but nowadays people just have to sing in their song!! i dont want to hear someone sing about the farm or their lost love! i want to make my own interpritations! and not some okay but not great voice over the sound of those beautiful instruments!!!

I think maybe it was just his way of proving that no Nudie-suited whippersnapper could upstage him...as far as I know, Marty's first RCA appearance was as a guest on a live Bill Monroe album when he was in his early teens(dueling mandolins on Rawhide), and Bill just wanted to prove he could keep up with the boy now that he was "famous" ;-)

You might get a more authoritative / accurate answer, but I'll give it a shot. Bluegrass is a type of Appalachain folk. Old Time is another, for example. Maybe check Wikipedia.

bluegrass combines elements of appalachian folk (irish, scottish fiddle and sacred music mostly) with blues and jazz, it's virtuoso string band music but fast as hell, with improvised solo breaks.
