Stop talking your just prooving how little you know,front wheel drive cars where designed to get better traction and not in the 80's but like the 20's dumbass.The transverse engine was designed by vw not to get less weight but to get more room,by putting the motor sidways you gain more cabin space(If your a skeptic just look for the original ad from VW and listen)Anyway dumbass fwd cars still have tranny's and they still are heavy,i have pulled enough motors and tranny's to know

A beetle is a longitudinal mounted flat 4 with a transaxle. They didn't start selling transverse until the Golf in the mid 70's and that's FWD.

Listen clearly,all things being equal(same size engine and car,aluminium tranny case)and you pull out the differential out of the transaxle so you only have the tranny,well they will weigh about the same,its not logical to think that that the gears and cases in a transverse engine will weigh less,Use a little logic and fire up the other side of your brain.Its a transmission mounted sideways,it weighs the same as a transmission monted front to back or a transmission mounted in the rear.

OK add up the weight of a mechanical transmission that stretched the FULL LENGTH OF THE VEHICLE with seperate cast housings for gearbox and differential + axles + full length tailshaft + mounts and bearing + the kind of rear suspension required to handle transmitting power to the road and subtract from that a single housing transverse transmission that's only 2 ft long with a couple of half shafts and a lightweight beam rear axle and do the math!

Ford pinto,chevy vega, datsun 210,vw rabbit,honda civic.All 4cyl cars in the same weight class.Well how come the more modern fwd cars dont weigh a lot less then the rwd car?Or maybe its your brain that weighs less

I treid to build a EV, I live in Michigan.Unfortunatley the thing failed, because of the cold would'nt allow the batteries to get a good chage,defrosters dont work very well neither.They're work fine in a warmer climant, but usless in a cold one.

I love burning dead dinosaurs as much as the next guy, but with gas prices, I might consider doing something like this. You could EASILY make up the steep prices for batteries, a motor, and a generator with the price of gas.

Don't know if this would work but did yeah try adding a heater to heat the batteries to a set temp? And run the power of the heater from off the home power or separate battery pack during the cold? If it works better in say 75 and above then set the heater to just that.
