I am totally against outsourcing jobs to India. O_o;; Our government should make it more expensive to do so in order to keep jobs here and keep tech support agents understandable.

By reducing costs, ... ( 3 months ago by lsudolemite)
By reducing costs, outsourcing makes it possible for PC companies to keep prices lower for you and me. If you want to make it more expensive for them to do business, expect prices to go up to compensate for lost profit. That's just basic economics.
That's right. But ... ( 3 months ago by Tanoro)
That's right. But the reverse is also true. By cutting costs in one place, you increase cost in another. I'd rather pay a little more for my computer and have the knowledge that the American that built it has a job just like me.
I'm not sure what ... ( 3 months ago by lsudolemite)
I'm not sure what you mean by that, unless what you're saying is that cutting support costs reduces the quality of service and ultimately results in a loss of customers.
Fair enough if you'd rather pay a little more, but most people who are on a budget are looking for the best deals for their money, and that consideration often trumps concern for whether Dell or any other manufacturer's call centers hire Americans. Same thing with people who hate Wal-Mart but still love their cheap prices.
Consider that a ... ( 3 months ago by Tanoro)
Consider that a different way. If we had more quality employment and less getting sent overseas, fewer of us would be on such tight budgets thus able to afford the higher prices. However, people left unemployed by the outsourcing of work to foreign countries have more important things to worry about than how much a computer costs.
I'm not saying ... ( 3 months ago by lsudolemite)
I'm not saying either approach is necessarily good or bad, but many people think you can have both lower prices and higher domestic wages, and that can't happen. In your example you assume that if Dell hires 1000 Indians, they're taking away 1000 American jobs. If Congress passed a law tomorrow forcing Dell to cease all outsourcing, it's now more costly to hire 1000 Americans for the same job. The result: jacked-up prices, less personnel hired and/or layoffs to maintain the same profit margin.

That's where you start getting into the principles of supply and demand. But hey, we're bogging this comment board down. If you'd like to continue this, let's switch to private messages.
