I wish I'd started at the age of two! But I only became interested 18 months ago when I had just turned 16! Oh the bane. And I would practice six hours a day if I had the time (and the patience) but I'm at college! I have to admit that, this girl saying she started at 2 suggest pushy parents, especially as it was her mum's choice that there wasn't to be another pianist in the house, who was already practicing loads too. And the Steinway grand piano? - all suggest upper-middle class and pushiness

I'm not saying she plays bad or anything! She's clearly astonishing and I respect her immensely - I mean, at 11 she has clearly reached a level I probably won't in my whole life :S but there are two things I can't stand - pushy parents/artistic privileges due to money. So the mention of a Steinway grand piano, and a sister also practicing loads and loads, and her mother choosing that she plays the violin, at that young age, well, hmmm.

snob or not, it doesn't matter and if she had pushy parents so what as well??? She is obviously enjoying playing the violin A LOT, you can see it in her eyes and hear it in her voice how much she loves it so at the end who cares whether she had pushy parents or not? she's certainly happy with playing the violin and does so very well.
Pushy parents who also give plenty of love to their children are not a bad thing.

with no gimmicks??? Look at the man... the man is a gimmick. I can't bare to watch him, but I agree that he is a great great player. Sort of like how I love Alfred Brendel but I can't really watch him play either. It bothers me. Distracting is the words. It's like how people are saying that great players can wear simple black because the clothes distract... but then why are great players doing strange acting jobs and making faces? It's silly.

So, Sviolinist, you are saying that the only reason that Maxim Vengerov is popular is because of the way he acts while playing? Take away his expression while he plays is like cutting off the hands of someone who "talks with there hands", as in when they talk the move there hands with the discussion.
It's just the way he plays, people don't go see him for the way he acts when he plays, they go for his music. If his movements are so distracting you obviously aren't appreciating the music.

Usually I have absolutely no problem with the facial expressions and such.. but sometimes I can't help but to think that Vengerov purposely exaggerates his movements and facial expressions..

I think the guy has earned the right to make the facial expressions. he's not just a fly-by-night virtuoso, but has a deep musicality and understanding of the pieces. Paganini was obviously a showman, but that doesn't denigrate his contribution.
