this strategy is messed up if your inafantry are overhelmed or your cavalry gets rushed by the entire army

Your infantry is covered, if they have protected flanks. Your cavalry you have to micro-manage to keep them alive, but they will take high casualties. But that will keep your infantry alive and able to take lots of enemies.

no ,i`m not talking about the map`s edge ,i`m talking about the fact that this only works against the computer or even only vs easy and medium computer ...against hard and very hard u need another tactic.
i`d say the best tactic is a nice sturdy first line and some dmg soldiers to flank or destroy his middle :)to rout as many of his man as fast as u can without routing yours :p

I'll try.
But start up the game, try a "quick battle" on open terrain, give yourself a good variety of units, and see if you get them into the positions I am describing.
Hint: Put your units in the corner you want to move to before starting the battle.

the best tactic is a line...it works against everything...when they are coming with phalanx you can easenly flank them or when they are coming from a line they are too weak

I'm sorry, but I don't consider this a tactic at all. Be a man and try to win without cornering yourself. Or at least try it on a map with a natural backstop, like a cliff. Then, and only then can you even be considered an "amateur" tactician.

Fair enough, but I wouldn't call it cheating to use the pause button during a battle, especially since in this case you are fighting against the computer. This gives you time enough to deliberate.
Now, the real challenge is to play against other people online. In most cases, you'll really have to think on your feet as their is no pause option.

This really isnt a tactic at all. Especially if ur outnumbered against Greeks or Macedonians or any faction with phalanxes. plus its cavalry not calvary....though for everyone out there, use the pause button during human vs. AI fights it evens it up and there is nothing wrong with using something thats available to you

Interesting, I wrote a battle for a story a while ago and had something like that happen, except it was a smaller force that managed to avoid the larger enemy, then attack when they were engaged by allies.
