@thekeymasta: Dianna was a jazz force and riffing long before she met Elvis and they got together.
She's got a great voice, and that's what most people want to hear. More than a few people who like her "cool jazz" vocal work probably would not enjoy her instrumental work nearly as much.
If you haven't already, I suggest you listen to some of her instumental performances for the real improv and originality you crave.

She's got chops, sure, but no more so than thousands of other music school grads waiting tables. She's utilized her pouty looks to financial but not artistic advantage, making album after album where she's in skimpy undies looking sultry and murmuring about love. Nothing *wrong* with that--it's brought her lots of fame and fortune--but don't tell me she's up there with Bird, Ella, Dizzy, Coltrane, Miles, Monk, Mingus, Dolphy, etc. She's closer to Peggy Lee or Polly Bergen.

As a jazz pianist, Diana is extremely talented as a piano player. She was playing when she was three years old, a born genius with perfect pitch. She has great swing and voicings, and is far from trite. You need to listen to more of her playing. Try to do what she can and does. It's no easy task, and to sign while you are doing it...that is why she is so popular and deserves it. She is no Ella, but Ella wasn't a piano player, too.

i don't have any opinion on diana cuz this is the first time i heard of her but i only looked it up cuz ziva from ncis sings it in episode 1 season 6. ziva has a great voice and i like the way she (ziva aka cote de pablo) sings it.

Have you heard "Basin Street East Proudly Presents Miss Peggy Lee"? She was much better live on that CD(less polished but more imaginative!) than on most of the more sanitized CDs. I mean, a better musician than you're giving her credit for.

Wrong goutsides442. I'm a huge Waits fan and Diana Krall fan - not so much. But this is a wonderful interpretation. Great job of getting into Waits mode by whole band.
I really like Tom's rhythm section on the original but his voice on that one is so bizarre it never sank in.
