Video Description:
British Airways Flight 9 experiences views of St. Elmo's fire on the plane along with smoke smelling like sulphur in the cabin. Suddenly, all engines on the 747-236B start flaming. Then, they flame out. "This is Speedbird 9. All 4 engines have failed!" the pilot shouts on the radio. With 263 people in the balance, Flight 9 starts falling.

This was just a quick quip from the steward to a concerned passenger. Something that might sound logical and reassuring to relax the passenger. In reality it was a comment from someone that knows very little, to a lady that knows even less.

Engine's need Oxygen to combust with the fuel to work. The Volcanic Ash stopped the flow of Oxygen getting into the Engine so it "Flamed Out" ie..stopped working.

Its called "Flamed out" because just before the engine stops big orange/yellow flames come out the back because of incomplete combustion. just like the flames on a bonfire, they are orange and yellow because it not a perfect fire (like a blue gas flame)

Jetliners hava a small jet engine in the tail of the plane called an APU, standard procedure on engine failures/ocean crossings is to start this APU. The APU isn't exposed to the elements like the main engines are, it was possibly still running. If the APU also fails there is battery backup to provide power to the electrical systems and the hydraulic system for flight controls, though the batteries will not last long, 30+ mins

the label 009 indicates the engines thrust / rotation.
when it flamed out, it takes time to slow down its rotation and thats why it said 009 (it continues to reduce to 000 but not perfectly 000)

I didn't think the film was that great, I just thought the lazy people who couldn't figure out they were flying through volcanic ash compared well to the pilots in the film
