Video Description:
Johnny Cash and John Hartford playing a medley of Bill Monroe songs (Monroe was the originator of the style of American country music known as "bluegrass"). Hartford was a bluegrass musician who wrote the song "Gentle on My Mind", which was a huge hit for Glen Campbell. Hartford also contributed to several songs on the "O Brother, Where Art Thou" soundtrack. (Songs in the medley: "Muleskinner Blues", "Columbus Stockade", "Blue Moon of Kentucky" and "Uncle Penn".
This aired on August 23rd, 1969.

the origin of the banjo came from similar instruments of mali, senegal, etc. ain't no banjo without the africans. which, i think, only adds to this culture.

that is vassar. and i also agree that this might be one of the best clips i have found as well. alison and U.S. are good but there is a lot of great stuff out there. i would think if you found this clip you know yonder mountain string band, but if not, check them out. i dont think it gets much better.

Wow....I didn't know the banjo is the only musical instrument invented in America. I love the harmony of bluegrass. The improvisation is similar to jazz.

I feel your pain. I figure I'll go with a harmonica for now. Easier to learn by someone with elbow impairments that disallows a banjo style instrument... /sigh.. this music makes me smile.

Thanks for the info about John Hartford - Love Brother Where Art Thou. Johnny Cash was a one-off wasn't he? No-one sounds like him, such a unique voice!

I concur with last couple of comments-great video footage. I think, with the fact that both John's - here - having low voices, that the guy on far left stage, in this, with a singing microphone, is probably the one which can be heard singing the really high harmony on "Uncle Pen." Great backing band and, of course, splendid singing and playing by the stars of the situation. I can't believe they're both gone, now.
