When a band risks losing their audience by changing their sound and evolving... realizing that they don't have to please everyone... they tend to get better or reach into new territory, and better themselves musically.
Bands are not all about the fans. There's a lot more to it than that. A band wants to grow, not stay in the same "exact sound" on every album just so they always churn out another "copy" of a previous album.
People hate change. But change often makes things better. Proven here.

There was a time when i would of given my right arm to go and see thrice live due to their energy, presence and style. But going on their last two albums i cant think of many bands i'd rather see less. Great job on alienating your fanbase

I respectfully disagree, and I believe that they are just as great as before, but in a different tone and mood than you are used to or prefer. Don't judge them just because you don't like what they give, you have a choice not to listen to them. All artists have different ideas, and i don't think you're allowed to criticize them unless you're making music just like them and are just as successful.

If they made music for the fans, it wouldn't be for the heart or true to themselves. This shows the true progression of a maturing band. Not to mention true thrice fans will stay with them no matter the genre. I know of no other band out there who have sold out less let alone who have anyway near the wide variety of sounds as Thrice.

I agree that the music they produce is in its own right technically accomplished and well produced music but you are wrong in the belief that i am not justified in criticizing them. Firstly no band is above criticism and blind admiration is in no way a positive thing. My point is that they have become so far removed from what they once stood for that they have in a sense alienated an entire legion of fans that they gathered during the first four albums (first impressions included)

The statement that "that true thrice fans will stay with them no matter what the genre" is obviously ridiculous and doesn't really need explaining but for your sake i will. Imagine the red hot chilli peppers decided to change genre and become a hardcore metal mathcore band. Do you honestly think that there devoted fans that have been with them since the first album would appreciate that and pay serious money to go and see them play that different genre which they are not into?

Also, on a side note if you like their older stuff, have you listened to the Fire disc? Its no Illusion Of Safety but it is heavier and very aggressive.
