Cecilia Bartoli sings Casta Diva (Maria Malibran tribute)

Uploaded by: agnellodei
Video Description:
This GORGEOUS version of Casta Diva is from Cecilia's upcoming new album "Maria" (no, not Callas...Malibran) tribute to the biggest diva of the 19th century.
Not since Montserrat Caballe has someone sang more beautiful pianissimo high B flats.
Haters, keep it to a minimum...
Remember, this song is meant to be a solemn prayer to the moon, so it is sung more intimitely than Maria Callas sang it. The key is in Malibran's version (F).

It is a prayer to the goddess of the moon for peace and inner strength...and Bellini wrote it ppp and sotto voce for a reason!

There is no ppp nor a sotto voce mark. You are making up an interpretation!!! I am looking at a Ricordi copy and no such markings are there. Not only that, she is imploring the moon to reveal its' face to calm the masses. She is not asking for inner strength. This is a desperate plea.

No that's NOT what Bellini wrote. In fact, he wrote 'sempre cres sino al ff'

that only appears in the part where the high B must be held up to the C! In the manuscript of Bellini it is clearly stated ppp sotto voce.

What manuscript? Are you looking at an orchestra score? In my Ricordi and Schirmer editions, there is no such marking. Where is that stated? In the orchestra? In the voice?
In the voice. And ... ( 1 month ago by agnellodei)
In the voice. And the Ricordi editions are VERY edited and corrupted, just look at "La Sonnambula", the tenor part transposed as much as a perfect fifth ,and high Eb's and many other ornamentations added to the final cabaletta.

Purism... The interpretation is in the soul of the that sings. Of course there ara papers that tell us what to do but a composer can never write everthing he wants in a score. That's the most beutiful part of interpretation. Cecilia is simply brilliant at it. And another thing... I don't beleave she would corrupt anything without justification and deep studying.
Most of all... just listen.

So sorry, I like Cecilia Bartolli but this is not good, she shouldn't record this one. Norma is a really serious roll, Maria Callas considered Norma even more difficult than Wagner's heroines . To me, it sounds almost an "amateur" . It is not even a decent interpretation.

go to cecilia's website and read the page she has about her new album - you'll understand this interpretation better

She wasn't trying to sing the whole role. She knows she can't do it (because the size of her voice only). On the other hand...who says this can only be sung by dramatic sopranos? let's remember she woman who created this role also created La Sonnambula and Beatrice di Tenda.

Her voice... so delicate!
It's not my preferred genre of voice but she sung this aria pretty and flawlessly so thank you!

no - as the title shows.
thats Maria Malibran, a singer of the early 19th century. Cecilia is absolutely mad bout her, making big fuss, but not being able to sing Belcanto in a way, that pleases the critics. She is best in rapid baroque coloratura. Arias that were written originally for castrati by Vivaldi, Händel.

One shouldnt compare this job with Callass one. Maria Callas and Casta Diva go together in a way. But Cecilia Bartoli is putting her soul inhere and she achieves a very nice rendition.

Well yes, Callas' Norma is the best norma in record, that's for certain, no other Norma in record has the voice to be called an assoluta and be compared with a Guiditta Pasta or Maria Malibran. But Cecilia does a beautiful job in this one aria.

this is absolutely beautiful---you people who are such haters of bartoli and critical of her--i don't believe you are good listeners maybe you need to adjust your hearing aide--you act as if you lived centuries ago--hey instruments are far more advanced now--so pick up the tune..i love you Bartoli!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

It's not bad. Pretty sound, if she sounds too nasal and as if her nose was plugged. The problem is her voice is too small. Sills did it best; the best musicianship, tone and emotion. Sutherland (depending on the version) was ravishing because of sheer power: Sutherland stuns you, Sills rips your heart out.

For my taste Sills had one of the ugliest tones I've heard, but she was a great singer.

This is absolutely awful and wrong.. The vibrato is like a sheep .. way tooo fluttery.. And she is NOT A MEZZO either, she sounds like a very light soprano.

I disagree. She has a strong voice and exquiste tone. I love Sutherland but his is even better.
Her vibrato is ... ( 3 days ago by kgarmaker123)
Her vibrato is Uneven, and that usually means that the person has heart problems, or blood pressure issues. When the voice is totally relaxed the vibrato should be even, not fluttery or wobbly. She sounds like a bleeting sheep!

She "sings" this very interestingly and I liked it better than anything I have heard her sing. That said, she is not an agile, flexible lyric-spinto soprano which is definitely what this aria requires. But, well done.
