Planes do glide, but remember that once a plane is gliding instead of cruising they decend quite rapidly. A 747 can glide 15kms for every 1 km it loses of altitude. At 40,000ft it can glide a total distance of just over 180km's (not a lot of room to find a suitable airfield). Thats from cruising height right down to ground level.
