Uploaded by: skimmeroutdoors
Video Description:
Cast netting live bait is the most effective way to get the bait you need quickly and efficiently. Al discusses what makes a cast net work. All the characteristics of a quality cast net are reviewed so that you can decide what type of net would suit your particular needs.
Bait caught in a cast net are always healthy and lively. Al demonstrates his skills catching live bunker in the creeks and rivers around his homeport in Babylon, New York.
Boat handling and setting up for the throw is critical for success. Al discusses techniques that are effective and illustrates exactly what to do using high quality graphics.
Of course the most important part of cast netting is being able to throw the net properly. Through a series of sharp, super slow-motion sequences, Al covers all aspects of loading and throwing a cast net. Every motion of the hands, legs and body is discussed and shown in slow motion. Viewing this video and practicing your throwing technique will have you opening that perfect bait catching circle every time.
Setting up to throw from a boat is quite different from practicing in your yard. Choosing the best position from which to work and preparing the net are most important. To help the viewer, Al demonstrates some impressive live action throws on bait from his boat "Skimmer".
When you have mastered the art of cast netting and have loaded up on bait, keeping them healthy and lively for the day is most important. Al discusses some live-well configurations and demonstrates a step-by-step installation of a simple and effective system.

what the videos and manuals rarely say is that it's all based on centrifugal motion. If you hold a frisbee flat on either side, you would make it spin by quickly rotating one hand over the other. same thing with a net, you can't just throw it, you have to make it spin

Not true at all. You can open a 12' net by slinging it between your legs if you know what you're doing. All you're doing is making an outward motion.

10' net can be thrown without the teeth, without getting too wet. Check out my Top Gun Striper Video, at about :30. Not Knocking on the captain's style, but without rain gear, you're a wet puppy if you have to throw multiple times back to back. Not to mention frozen if it's cold. Putting the net in the mouth is a bad idea too. Around here sometimes the bait is in nasty water (poop).

One thing I disagree with about this video is the claim that people should start with an 8' net. I've taught a number of folks how to properly throw a caster and I can say for 100% certainty that starting off *smallest* is the best way to learn the basics and eventually make your throws perfect. In my opinion (me being just another random guy on the internet who has been throwing a cast net for a while) the best progression is 2' incraments' start at 4' then to 6' to 8' to 10'.

@jadet13: That ain't no joke. Anyone who's cast netted fish in a river or lake (where it's allowed, that is) knows that you can get dinner for that whole week on a good day, as opposed to the 1 really good one and thousand "throw that pathetic thing back" sized fish you get from fishing with lures. Teach a man to fish, eh? Videos like this will feed a man, his wife, kids, and all extended family for a lifetime.
